Let's Empower Our Lives by Empowering Our Stories

It's 1:30 a.m. and here I am at the computer struggling with an idea - how to articulate it in a way that may resonate with people, especially parents. What is the idea?

One of the themes in The Co-Walkers is embracing a truth that brings joy to your life. Our truth is really the story we tell ourselves or choose to embrace that defines who we are and informs our intentions and our actions.

Plato said 'Those who tell stories rule society." Many of the stories we are told are defeating, mean spiritied and are meant to appeal to our weaknesses instead of our strengths and aspirations. They often are meant to justify exploitation of ourselves and others.  As I have stated in this website and many times before, by consciously choosing the stories we tell our children and encourage them to reflect upon, we can fortify them for their life's journey. Fantasy, magic, uplifting adventures may seem frivolous but they are the way to a child's heart, soul, and imagination. We have almost forgotten their power. Our era is crying out for a new mythology, stories to live by that will inspire us, evoke the awakenings we need culturally and globally to create positive change in our lives, our communities, and around the world. We need stories that inspire us to cross thresholds, enter new realms, and resist camplacency. We need to create stories that nurture the courage we need to build a world in which our children can flourish.

So what do our children read? What stories do they invest their time and creative energies in? The recent trend toward dark, flawed heroes, vampires, murder and mayhem, and debasing humour as entertainment  may seem harmless and even fun. But don't think they do not have an effect or influence on how they interpret the world

So these are my thoughts on a late Wednesday night.  Quite simply we need stories to live by, to light the way.
